Ten Minutes with Supernatural’s Misha Collins

It’s been nearly a year since we were introduced to Supernatural’s first angel in residence, Castiel. With his unblinking stare and deep, humorless voice, he’s been guiding Dean Winchester down a biblical path that’s leading them all straight into the ultimate maelstrom known as the apocalypse.

But when the director yells cut, Castiel falls away and in his place stands the witty and charming Misha Collins, fitting in on the Supernatural set as if he’d been there since day one.

Listen in as Misha Collins talks to me about body swaps, the fear of God and his recent dual role as both Castiel and the human vessel he calls home.

Cyn: Last week’s episode “The Rapture,” was a total tour de force for you, wasn’t it? How hard was it to play two different characters in the same episode?

Misha: It was a challenge on a couple of levels. I needed to really flush out a distinct character [for Jimmy] that was going to have different physical, vocal, and personality traits so that there was going to be a clear distinction between him and Castiel. It was a challenge to stay on top of exactly where I was in the story, because there were flashbacks and different arcs for each of the characters, so there was a lot going on that required me to be attentive. It was interesting and I enjoyed it. Maybe next season I could ask Eric to let me play all the characters . . .

Cyn: Well, the fans have been bugging Eric Kripke for a body swap episode. So maybe one of the Winchester boys could change places with Castiel.

Misha: Oh, that would be fun. That would be a great opportunity to mock one another.

Cyn: If you made the switch, which of the boys would be easiest for you to mock. . . or shall we say, imitate?

Misha: (laughs) Jared and Jensen have both given me a lot of material to work with on the mocking, so it’s hard to say, probably a toss up. It would be more absurd for me to play Jared just because he seems so gigantic to me. He’s just so tall that there’s something in that that would be inherently, physically different. So, I think that that would probably be the most fun to do.

Cyn: When Castiel returned from his trip “home” he had some rather biting comments for Dean. What exactly happened up there to make him do such a 180?

Misha: I honestly don’t know that much more than you do about why the change in attitude, except for some things that I do know that you don’t know.

Cyn: Could you vague that up a bit more, Misha?

Misha: I’m guessing when I say, I think that [Castiel] was dragged up to heaven and he was tortured or very sternly rebuked in some way that, pardon the expression, put the fear of God back in him and now he’s back to toeing the party line, which is how he started.

I think that’s where Castiel was in episodes one and four of the season. But I think he started to have a lot of doubt and he started to develop a fondness for the boys and concern for their well being and I think that he was dragged back upstairs and. . . there was something a little bit telling in what Anna says. Something to the effect that it’s really, really bad news to be dragged back upstairs and that, to me, makes it sound like maybe there was some waterboarding that went on up there.

Cyn: That’s a tough concept for me. The fact that there are angels torturing angels in heaven.

Misha: Right. Well, you know in “On the Head of a Pin” we saw the angels asking Dean to do them a favor and help torture Alistair, so it’s certainly not something that is out of the realm of possibility. It’s something that’s in their toolbox that they would consider doing. It seems like, for angles, sometimes the ends do justify the means, which I think has been a source of a lot of Castiel’s doubt up until this point.

Cyn: Knowing how Supernatural likes to go out with a bang each season, I imagine you’ve had more than your share of hours on set recently.

Misha: The finale itself is a bigger episode than most, so they even added an extra day for the shooting just so they could get it all in. Definitely long hours but it’s a lot of fun.

Cyn: And will we be seeing more of you next season?

Misha: I got a letter, so it’s official and I’m delighted to be part of the show for next year.

Makes me happy, too, but I have to wonder. . . knowing nothing at all about how this season will end, I’m truly boggled by how Castiel will fit into the next season. Then again this is Supernatural, so Misha coming back doesn’t necessarily mean Castiel is coming back. I wouldn’t put it past Kripke to give us someone entirely new riding that talented body.

TVguide a interviewé Eric Kripke, le créateur de Supernatural, sur la fin de saison et l’apocalypse. Pas mal de spoilers, pas très précis mais c’est déjà ça!

Want to know what’s up with the Winchester Brothers? We asked Supernatural creator Eric Kripke to spill some secrets about the last two episodes of the truly scary heading-toward-the-Apocalypse fourth season. Here’s his exclusive scoop for TV Guide Magazine.

What are the major confrontations in these last two episodes?
OK, a spoiler because I love you: Dean [Jensen Ackles] and Uncle Bobby [Jim Beaver] learn about Sam’s little demon blood addiction. They’re understandably horrified, but instead of having yet another argument with Sam [Jared Padalecki], they take action. Drastic action. Action that will drive a wedge between Sam and Dean.

Uber-demon Lilith told Sam that she was not going to survive long enough for the “good parts” of the Apocalypse. Sam is obsessed with killing her. How do Dean and Bobby feel about that?
I don’t think anyone has a problem with killing Lilith. It’s how Sam wants to kill her that’s troubling–it’s the copious amounts of demon blood that he’s knocking back. I think Dean and Bobby want to kill Lilith and save the world, they just don’t want to forfeit Sam’s soul in the process.

Does Sam’s demon pal Ruby play a role in these episodes?
Yes, she plays a large role in the final episodes. Sam and Dean split up, basically, and so Sam joins Ruby on a final run to kill Lilith, while Dean is hanging out with the Angels, trying to do the same.

What will the angel Castiel and his boss Zacharias be up to?
They’ll be preparing Dean for his final, destined role in this battle. The Apocalypse is coming down to the wire, and it’s time for Dean to play his part. While we’re on the subject, besides Zach and Cass, a lot of the Angel gang are coming back–Anna makes an appearance, and even the Prophet Chuck pops in for a bit.

Is it true that there are some major deaths in the finale? How many?
Yes. Some major deaths. More than one, less than 12.

Since Dean already died, is it Sam’s turn?
Nope. Sam lives for this one. We were getting a little tired with killing and resurrecting our guys–at least for now–they may die again sometime next season, who knows.

How will the deaths affect the storyline next season?
In a very big way.

Will there be that promised great confrontation between Sam and Dean? Should we expect a major rift between the brothers by the end of the season finale?
Yes, there will be a huge confrontation, bridges burnt, and a seemingly insurmountable chasm between the guys. But it will happen before the end of the finale. We’ll deal with some of the repercussions of their split before the season’s out. Just to torture our fans.

Last season’s wow cliffhanger ended with Dean dying. Is there a cliffhanger this season? If so, any teasers?
Yes, there will be a big cliffhanger that will set the stage for season 5. I can’t say what it is, but it ain’t good. Stay tuned.

Supernatural: Will Sam Go Evil?

Ah, Thursday. It’s the best/worst day of TV, and one of the things that makes it such a pleasure/burden for us is the thrill of Supernatural, which (buried though it is in a grueling time slot with The Office, Grey’s Anatomy and CSI) continues to be one of the standouts of the night, and heck, of the week.

As SPN barrels toward its season-four finale, we thought it fit to chat up writer-producer Ben Edlund about what to expect. Read on to find out what he told us exclusively about Sam’s blood addiction finally catching up to him and about where Cas fits in to the series’ future…

Good or Evil? At this point, the question of Sam’s morality remains open, but Edlund reveals that Sammeh’s blood addiction has consequences that are out of his control: « The model of an addict bottoming out and becoming basically something else, almost a creature of reflex, is one of the things he’s going to have to face. And that’s going to make trouble for Dean and Sam—they don’t agree on this particular issue. Dean’s not happy about it. » Creature of reflex, huh? Love the idea of a more animalistic Sam and of Dean having to do something about it!

Angel Baby: As promised late last year, Castiel (Misha Collins) will be a regular in season five, but Edlund says we don’t have to worry about the new addition throwing off the balance between the Winchesters. According to Edlund, « He’s not going to be Joe Pesci to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the back seat going, ‘Ah, guys! I’m hungry now! Let’s go eat!’ Cas already has his own mode of transportation—he already gets around pretty fast. » Long story short, SPN didn’t turn into a wacky buddy comedy while you weren’t looking. Says Edlund, « I don’t imagine that it’s going to be three guys in a car with a baby. Although it’s good to throw something cute into season five. Maybe a puppy. Or an evil kitten that they keep in the glove box. » (And we shall call that kitten Moe…)

The Dark Is Rising: According to Edlund, everything we’ve seen over this past, amazing season is really just a setup: « This season is a stage-setting season for next season, » which, of course, is the war between dark and light. Says Edlund, « I don’t want to go too far into the details of what happens when two forces clash…Look at this season as buildup to something even bigger that, of course, I cannot talk about or [show runner] Eric [Kripke] would be mad at me. » And who will be the enemies in that war? Per Edlund, « Lilith is still a problem. At least Sam and Dean are dealing with her presence in the world as a problem. This is a show about averting the Apocalypse. »

The Big Guy: Lilith is still kicking around, but according to Edlund, it’s her boss who’s really the problem: « Lucifer is more of an awe-inspiring force. There’s such a massiveness to the power and the danger represented by that being. Insinuation will be our model. » Basically, we’ll know he’s there, but we might not get to see him until the very end…

The Ladies: For those of you worried that Ruby and/or Anna will be hanging around more rather than less in season five, Edlund has some consoling words for you: « For my own two cents, I don’t feel like this is a story about either of these two guys finding love. They’re not at that phase in their lives. It’s about two guys gearing up for and hoping to avert the Apocalypse. So dating is not utmost. »

Supernatural video: Has Castiel Been Fired?

castiel-300Last week Supernatural took a slightly tarter tone after several weeks of quirky, self-referential fun. Given the episode’s premise, I think it was a good compromise for Adam to actually be John’s son, but for him to never appear on camera in his mortal state. The ghoul’s revelation that Adam really was a Winchester was morbid and melancholy but also satisfying. It added to the series’ legacy without screwing up the essential formula.

This Thursday Supernatural comes back with « The Rapture, » which looks to continue the series’ return to darker, more through-line oriented stories. But that doesn’t mean the premise won’t have you scratching your chin as you wonder, « How could that happen? What’s really going on here? »

According to the CW’s official Supernatural press release, « Castiel (Misha Collins) appears to Dean (Jensen Ackles) in a dream and says he has something important to tell him but they need to meet somewhere private.  Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki) go searching for Castiel but instead find Jimmy, Castiel’s human vessel, who has only a spotty recollection of being an angel.  Jimmy wants to return to his family and normal life, but Dean and Sam are concerned about his safety. »

The clip shows the emergence of Jimmy, and I have to say he does not ‘sound’ like Castiel. Take a look.

Part of it’s that he’s speaking with an inflection to his voice, a fairly heavy Bronx accent. He sounds both soft spoken and husky, and he looks absolutely gobsmacked.

Lots of questions come to mind. Why did Castiel vacate his host? Where did he go? When is he coming back? How did his body come to be lying in a pile of scrap metal with sparks shooting out of it? Could the angel actually be hurt? Or, worse yet, did he get the pink slip for putting the celestial agenda in jeopardy one too many times? Who was Jimmy before he was possessed by Castiel? Who will he become now that his 90 minutes of Heaven is over?

Speculate to your hearts’ content below. Then watch Supernatural Thursday at 9pm on The CW.
